Lizdeikos Gymnasium in Radviliškis: an event about history and respect for historical memory

On 24 January 2025, an event was held in Radviliškis to commemorate the Jewish community of Radviliškis by placing a memorial sign in memory of the synagogue before the Second World War.

The Tolerance Education Centre (TEC) of the Lizdeikos Gymnasium in Radviliškis responded to a call from the Jakovas Bunka Charity and Sponsorship Fund to erect a sign commemorating the former synagogue in the centre of the town. The sign was unveiled on 24 January 2025, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The unveiling was attended by the Israeli Ambassador to Lithuania, representatives of various institutions: the Jewish Heritage Route Association, the Secretariat of the International Commission, the Mayor of Radviliškis Municipality, representatives of the local community, teachers and students from Radviliškis schools.

After the unveiling of the memorial stone, the commemorative event moved to the Lizdeikos Gymnasium in Radviliškis. The headmistress of the school, Ina Bajarauskaitė, addressed the guests and participants, telling them about her visit to the Stutthof concentration camp and the questions to which she was looking for answers, but unfortunately, she did not find them, because the questions were about what she had seen and heard during her visit to the camp: how can a human being inflict such an evil act on another human being?

Israeli Ambassador Hadas Wittenberg Silverstein, who attended the commemoration, said that the story of Auschwitz was also the story of her family, as her paternal grandparents lost their families in the Holocaust.

The creative group of the Lizdeikos Gymnasium in Radviliškis gave an artistic speech about the destruction of a large part of the Jewish community in Lithuania.

In the second part of the ceremony, representatives of the Israeli Embassy offered to take part in a quiz about the State of Israel: its history, culture, and relations with Lithuania.
