Commemorating 13 January with a global civic initiative ‘The Light of Victory’

We invite everyone to join us in lighting candles of unity, remembrance, and victory in windows for ten minutes on 13 January 2025 at 8.00 a.m. all over Lithuania and beyond.

The “Light of Victory” citizens’ initiative will commemorate January 1991, when Lithuanian citizens, driven by unity and the quest for freedom, achieved a historic victory. The nation stood up to the aggression of the Soviet occupiers and local collaborators and the attempted military coup and defended the independence of the restored state.

The symbol of the initiative is a candle representing life, light, justice, memory, and unity.

The civic initiative “Light of Victory” (formerly known as “Memory is alive because it testifies”) has been organised since 2008. The number of educational and other institutions supporting the initiative increases every year. Not only Lithuanian educational institutions but also state institutions actively support the initiative. It has become a tradition that the President of the Republic of Lithuania, the Seimas, the Government, Ministries, municipalities, embassies of the Republic of Lithuania abroad, museums, libraries, hospitals, police stations, border guards, institutions, organisations and citizens of Lithuania join the initiative.
